Marissa & Isaac's Adventures

Basel - Order the Chasbangel

We wanted to do a quick stop in Switzerland, but as it is very expensive we choose to stay in Saint Louis, France, which is a 20 min walk to the city of Basel, Switzerland. The town of Saint Louis, while not very busy or exciting, is at a unique location. The countries of Switzerland, Germany, and France all meet in the middle of the Rhine - just east of Saint Louis. Pictured here is me with my new slippers we found at the supermarket to keep my hands warm as we walk through Saint Louis.
The walk along the river from Saint Louis to Basel was so lovely.
We explored the city of Basel and saw the gorgeous town hall. There are murals all along the building and inside the courtyard. The building is hard to miss!
Now, here is where Isaac and I met our match - the Chasbangel. A hollowed out baguette-like sesame bread, filled with cheese fondue and then stuffed with a hotdog. And of course, topped with crispy onions. Dreams do come true.
The one, the only, the Chasbangel!!!
While we digested the Chasbangel, we headed down the side streets to explore more of the city.
We found the famous House of Rock mural and Isaac easily named 90% of the artists featured. I'm going to need a cheat sheet for this one...
We were pumped to find out that we were in Basel during their annual Autumn Festival, with multiple markets spread across town. After we found the Chasbangel at the first one, we wandered across the river to check out a couple of the other markets. We found some amazing mulled wine.
We also opted for some bratwurst in true European fashion. Isaac's excitement for food radiates through this photo.
The epic views of the city! The two steeples are from the Basel Minster, a famous Gothic style church in Basel. We were told that it was worth climbing to the top.
The lovely corridors of the Basel Minster.
After the craziest sets of stairs, crouching and braving narrow ledges, we made it to the top!
A shot from the inside of the steeple. The stairs made us work up a sweat despite the chilly fall in Switzerland.
And lastly... the view! We truly lucked out with the weather. It was a clear, brisk day that we could see the whole town and miles beyond.
We came across this super cozy bar and couldn't have found a better place. The owner was friendly and the drinks were festive - a killer combo.
As many of our great memories on this trip, we happen to stumble across another market - this one was the best of them all! A huge plaza lined with craft vendors and food and music. Switzerland knows how to ring in the autumn season.
